Phoebe
Hearst Preschool has four classrooms for children ages 2 through 5. Programs
in each classroom are designed to enhance developmental learning levels
of children in each class. Room 5 is a transitional kindergarten, with
activities that enhance kindergarten readiness.
Classroom
activities encourage imagination and playful spirit. An outdoor play area
directly off of the classrooms offers easy access for active play.
We have a full kitchen and serve nutritious snacks and a hot lunch as
part of our daily routine in all classrooms.

Room
2
The
main goal in Room 2 is to give very young children independence and social
interaction with their peers. Room 2 is a new start for kids and helps
shape them for their future at the school and in the world. We encourage
Room 2 classmates to be themselves and to approach activities independently
and with self-confidence. Room 2 offers lots of free play with increased
group activities as the year progresses.

Room
3
In Room 3, children work on expanding independence and such self-care
skills as dressing themselves. Children use this independence to develop
deeper connections with friends and deeper involvement in activities.
These connections help develop skills for working through feelings and
cooperating. The schedule in Room 3 involves more organized group time
and more weekly <special activities.>

4
The curriculum in Room 4 continues our tradition of “hands-on”
exploration and discovery with an emphasis on peer interaction and collaboration.
For example, our “daily vote” with “block ballots”
uses math concepts to determine stories and activities. We read “Chapter”
books to foster comprehension, memory, and continuity. We also introduce
children to sports to develop teamwork and sportsmanship. Dynamic, sustained
group play reinforces literary themes.

Room
5
Room 5 is our Transitional Kindergarten classroom. At ages 4 and 5, children’s
social and emotional development reaches a critical stage. Room 5 is a
smaller and more structured group that helps children to develop successful
and socially acceptable problem-solving skills. Creative expression builds
on advanced knowledge and a wider range of art materials such as ceramic
clay, textiles, and three-dimensional construction.
Through creative projects and activities we begin to introduce early math
and writing experiences. The flexible curriculum and small group size
in Room 5 allows us to observe and identify different skill levels and
adjust activities to meet each child’s individual needs.
